The Baekma girls made their official debut at Club Freebird a couple of weeks ago and I was lucky enough to take some pictures of the gig with these amazing girls.
Baekma was formed late last year and played their first show on Christmas Eve at Yogiga in Hongdae to a small gathering of friends who witnessed their first pony steps. They threw presents into the crowd and I managed to nab a used Buddha book while my friends got some pills (turned out to be vitamins) and glow-in-the-dark stickers.
The line up includes Eilis of Verity and Ava on drums, Maggie of New Blue Death on guitar, Caroline on bass, and Steph on synth. The bulk of the singing is shared between Maggie and Steph.
From what I’ve gathered ‘baekma’ is a kind of whispered Korean insult thrown at foreign girls living in Korea. It means ‘white horse’ and I’ll let you run wild with theories as to what that might mean.
I applaud these girls for having fun with that word and the stereotypes that might be associated with it in Korea. Also, it’s just really great to see people having fun in the Hongdae music scene, all the while showing that girl bands can grow and thrive.
I’m excited to see more from them!
Hooray! Thanks TamingSentences!
From Baekma’s first real show. We’ll be playing again March 16th in Double A Studio, Hongdae. Cannae wait!
